Usability of connection area between Bangkok mass transit system and buildings as a public space

Abstract

The objective of this qualitative research is finding the way to develop the connection between public transportation and buildings in the form of large public open space. There are three case studies in Bangkok which are Chong Nonsi skywalk, Quartier Park and Pathumwan Skywalk. I study the physical environment, usability, user’s problems and needs, providing appropriate space for traffic and the appropriation to be public open space as the theory. The study shows that there are many similar components such as variety of routes and variety of activities but different in facilities. For the user’s problems and needs, there are no area plans provided for all three spaces and there is not enough lights at night for some spaces. Besides, the users not only walk through those spaces, but the users also want to do others activities. Overview, all three spaces are good public open spaces. The conclusion for the way to develop the large public open space between public transportation and buildings are being the convenient walking spaces that easy to access, ensure that there is a range of accessible, high-quality and inclusive open spaces available to everyone. The other way to develop these public open spaces is creating the good quality public spaces which it does not disturb traffic.
