Abstract
This research of ‘A study of alternative materials for Rakteelai’ (a material which made by mixing resin or gum of
a plant like Melanorrhoea, lacquer varnish, and ashes together then simmering to a chunk) aimed to find other alternative
materials to use instead of Rakteelai (or Rakkranae). This study focuses on qualities of materials, material or product
safety, easy purchasing materials, aesthetic and beauty, and usefulness of fixing works. The researcher had been trying on
a lot of experiments and finally created 5 alternative materials for Rakteelai which are, (1) a combination of epoxy and
wood dust (2) a combination of epoxy and dry set grout (3) a combination of wood dust and dry set grout (4) a
combination of wood dust and sandal wood paste and (5) a combination of wood dust and glue or paste.
The research result illustrates that material (1), which is a combination of epoxy and wood dust, is the
most appropriate material. Since it can be substituted well for Rakteelai not only in pressing patterns on a mold
or sculpting for a decoration, but also good for creating a curve on Khon masks. The texture of this material gives
a smooth surface which does not shrink, so it shines when gilding gold leaves. Moreover it has a good quality of
attaching and joining as cement, therefor it is comfortable to use when the work need to be fixed.
