This paper presents a DC motor speed control using minimum overshoot PI controller design. The
design method was based on adjusting the PI controller parameters to avoid overshoot in the closedloop
system step response for controlling DC motor including minimum phase analysis.
The proposed system consists of PI controller, AC to DC converter, separately excited DC motor rated
at 1.1 kW, 220 V, 6.5 A, 3000 rpm, optical tachometer and frequencyto voltage converter (F/V). The mathematical model
was derived from the designed parameters of PI controller to control DC motor by MATLAB/Simulink
program. The experimental results are found that the step response overshoot is below 5% and agree
with predicted value.
