Rehabilitation and Development of Sakae Krang Old Market Community, Uthaithani

Abstract

Uthai Thani is a town on the high land and in the remote area. There are not any main rivers, so it is unable to communicate by ships. Therefore, the farmers of Uthai Thani had to carry their paddy to the rivers by carts. The rice merchants had to build their shops and granaries along the riversides and then it became big community and was called the village "Sakae krang". This area is rich with a kind of trees locally called Sakae. At the beginning, Chinese called it as "Xin kia prawns" and later it became a big rice market. The study found that Sakae krang village is a unique community. It is an important commercial area of Uthai Thani. Many kinds of goods are available here including local products and agricultural equipment, clothes, souvenirs, crafts, vegetables, fruits, and sweets. From the past until the present, Thai and Chinese culture, architecture, and lifestyle are the characteristics of the community along theSakae krang River. From the obtained result, this study proposes the guidelines for community development as follows; 1. Improvement project of old buildings of Sakae Krang market. 2. Restoration project of houseboat community. 3. The improvement and development project of recreational areas along the Sakae Krang River. 4. Improvement project of road traffic and facilities on Thachang road. 5. Raft community Learning Center. 6. Development project of Senior Care Center in Royal Rachawat and Hantraram Communities. 7. Development project of commercial area on Srimuang road.8. Development project of new residential area.
