dc.description.abstractThe purposes of this research were to analyse Sanan Silakorn’s creation of portrait statues of significant kings of Thailand and to apply the body of knowledge to improve the content of courses taught at the Department of Sculpture, Poh-Chang Academy of Arts, Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin, and distribute the knowledge among fine and applied arts institutes and art related agencies. Questionnaire was used as the data collection tool to evaluate art expression of the statues in terms of content, form, composition and aesthetics. The population consisted of 70 respondents who were scholars, university lecturers, experts in sculpting statues of kings and sculptors. According to the research results, the statues of kings with the four highest aesthetic appreciation scores notably expressed the following characteristics: 1) the statues of kings are memorials to their royal duties that were highly beneficial to the nation; 2) they create a sense of honour towards the monarchy; and 3) they create a sense of love for the nation and heroic ancestors who preserved the nation’s sovereignty. The statues of kings also remarkably expressed the following forms: 1) accuracy of anatomical structure and shape; 2) a sense of security and gracefulness; and 3) the ability to employ composition through an arrangement of body language to create unity among the statues. The artistic expressions through content and form display the sculptor’s achievements in making the statues of kings an expression of to the monarchy who conducted their royal duties that have been greatly beneficial to the Thai nation. The statues are memorials to commemorate the kings’ good deeds as faith and as role models. The statues further represent the sculptor’s ability to create sculptures that exhibit advanced theoretical and practical knowledge, i.e. extensive expertise in anatomy, and the language of aesthetics of form that uses visual elements as tools to create unity, and achieve goals in which historical stories were interpreted and used as a source of inspiration to express faith, good deeds and life.en_US
