Strength and Durability of Mortar Containing Bagasse Ash and Fly Ash
Abstract
This research was to study the strength and durability of mortar containing bagasse ash and fly ash. Strength such as compressive and flexural strength was investigated. Durability tested was drying shrinkage, sulfate expansion, and weight loss of mortar by acid attacks. Throughout the experiment, the percentage replacement of cement by bagasse ash and fly ash was 30% by weight of cementitious material. The ratio of bagasse ash to fly ash of 50:50 by weight was used in this study. The test results showed that the mortar containing bagasse ash and fly ash had lower strength at 7 days than the control mortar. However, at the age of 28 and 60 days, the mortar with bagasse ash and fly ash showed higher strength than the control mortar. The drying shrinkage of mortar containing bagasse ash and fly ash was comparable to the control mortar. The sulfate expansion, and weight loss by acid attacks of mortar containing bagasse ash and fly ash were lower than the control mortar. The use of bagasse ash and fly ash resulted the quality improvement both strength and durability of mortar.
