MUSEUM MANAGEMENT MODEL FOR SUSTAINABILITY AND SELFSUFFICIENCY: A CASE STUDY OF BAN BHANDHARAK FOLK MUSEUM
Abstract
The purposes of this research were to (1) study the history and context of the local museum
in the aspect of folk wisdom (2) explore management approaches of the local museum in the aspect
of folk wisdom, a case study of Ban Bhandharak Folk Museum and (3) present museum management
model for sustainability and self-sufficiency.
The qualitative research method of this study focused on
the study of local museum in theaspect of folk wisdom; a case study of Ban Bhandharak Folk Museum, Lam Phaya Sub-district, Bang
Len District, Nakhon Pathom Province. Fifteen informants were local administrators, museum
experts, community members and academics. The data collection methodologies were an in-depth
interview, a participatory observation and related documents study and review.
The research results revealed that 1) the origin and context of the local museum in the aspect
of local wisdom is from the needs of people in the community in order to conserve and preserve
ancestors’ heritage as well as preserve identity of local knowledge. This is the cultural heritage that
has been affected by the growth of social change and could be lost if there is no conservation. 2)Ban
Bhandharak Folk Museum has been created to have its own valuable identity and it has been
developed and existed on Henry Fayol's. There is the self-reliance museum administration by setting up
a community pilot store that generates local incomes. 3)There are three factors for the local museum
management for sustainability and self – reliance; is Organizing a living museum that defines the forms of
interior components of the museum, is Driving the museum with the management principles: Planning
Organizing Commanding Coordinating and Controlling , is Self-reliance budgetary management is a way
to handle the revenue to support the administration of the museum.
