STRONG COMMUNITY COMMITTEES MODEL IN DEVELOPMENT OF THE SLUM IN BANGKOK
Abstract
The purposes of this research were to study the slum environment in Bangkok;
study the current roles of community committees in slum development; study the
supporting factors for stronger role of community committees in developing slum
communities; and propose the strong community committees model in developing the
slum in Bangkok.
This qualitative research used interviews and observation as methodologies. The
research findings were: the slum community had drug problem, but almost all community committees
were committed to resolving the problem; there were weaknesses and some limitations in
the role of the committee in achieving their goals and there should be changes in the
role of the community committee; the factors that led to strengthening the community
committee were leadership, knowledge, community networks, and support from Bangkok
metropolitan; and the strong Community Committees model in development of the slum
in Bangkok was the leadership model that brought about a strong and successful
implementation of the community committee.
